  • Serendipity SSCB#44 – My Guy!

Welcome to the June Challenge for Serendipity Stamps! This month the challenge is My Guy (masculine card)! The Design Team has the added challenge of using texture (embossing, fabric, etc.). You can get all the details over on the Serendipity Challenge Blog.  We have something new…a “Stamp of the Month”. Each month a different image will be 50% off. This month- it’s the Grill. Be sure to check out the great deals on the Clearance Stamps, too. And as always, we have a  have a gift certificate up for grabs to a random player.

My first thought at this time of year for a guy card, was of course, Father’s Day. I had the idea to use the train image, but then I realized I had forgotten to get a Father’s Day greeting. So I guess necessity IS the mother of invention, lol. I searched the word dies & made the DAD out of the Day die.
    Dads Train 06474
For the background frame & mountain part of the scene, I used Brusho water color crystals by sprinkling them onto damp water color paper, then blending them out with a wet paintbrush. I added a bit of shimmer by washing over it with some pearlescent water colors.

Here’s the picture of the background, showing how I die cut the large piece & made a frame out of it. From the center, I found the area I wanted for the mountains and die cut a circle around it. By masking, I stamped the background part of the scene & filled in with more of the trees.  I added a woodgrain embossed white front & the cut out train. The envelope ties were also fussy cut and added behind the die cut oval w/ the greeting. The upper left corner element is just a leftover piece of the water color background and a Candi dot.

The finished card is 4.25 x 5.50 and these are the Copics I used on the train image.

    NCC Set Sail 06436
For my seafaring card, after stamping & coloring the sailboat, I used the two sizes of ODBD circle dies to cut it and my out of the box technique to keep from cutting off the mast. After edging the sailboat circle w/ a black marker, I cut a white circle to put behind it and a larger circle out of the same dp I used for the largest pennant. The background panels came about because I had less than a full sheet of the two large strips so I added a narrow piece of the starry dp between the two and attached them to a large white panel I die cut using the largest die of the Flourished Star Pattern set. A smaller pennant, some die cut stars & the compass rose were added to finish.

Here’s a look at the inside using some leftover pieces.NCC Set Sail inside 06442

My second card takes us to the mountains & forest. For this card, I got out my trusty little brayer and a rainbow ink pad and brayered over a large white panel.
    NCC Deer & Eagle 06456
I had the top white panel left after I die cut the white circle to back the sailboat card above, so I die cut it using the same Flourished Star Pattern die & used a slightly larger circle to make it a bit bigger and after determining the opening on the brayered panel, I stamped the mountain scene, did a little masking and stamped parts of it again to fill in. On the top white panel, I used a torn diagonal mask & brayered the same colors across it. I did even it up a tad using sponging. A reverse circle mask was used to sponge in the sun then I stamped the sun/eagle on top and the deer & tree at the bottom. The ground image was also stamped using the dark blue of the rainbow pad. I like how it just adds the hint of solid ground. The greeting was also stamped just under the circle opening.

The finished card is 5.50 x 4.25 and here’s a look at the inside using a leftover frame I had sitting around. I brayered it, stamped the tree, deer and the eagle.

  • Serendipity SSCB#42 pt 2 – Monograms & Verse!

Posted on April 15, 2015 12:00 AM by Julie 2 Comments

    Country Day cu 06149
    SS Button_design team_res
Welcome to the April Challenge for Serendipity Stamps! This month the challenge is Monograms & Verse! You can get all the details over on the Serendipity Challenge Blog.  We have something new…a “Stamp of the Month”. Each month a different image will be 50% off. This month- it’s the Jar Label.  Be sure to check out the 50% off select wood stamps, too. And as always, we have a  have a gift certificate up for grabs to a random player.

Seems I’ve been returning to my roots and working with a lot of water colors lately. But they really are fun and pretty easy..especially if you’re just making backgrounds to use for die cuts.. I tried to use a different coloring medium, but this beautiful country scene just begged to be water colored.

    Country Day 06148
Since it’s pretty detailed, I pulled out my long neglected water color pencils. They are a good way to add color just where you want it. In conjunction with a few water brushes, coloring a scene like this is fairly quick and painless. And if you get a bit too much color in places, just wet it and dab with a paper towel. Instantly lighter (did this on the trees and roof)! After I was finished I did go back & add just a touch more color here & there with my Tombow markers (water based).

It’s a big scene and I didn’t feel it needed any embellishment, so I used another piece of water color paper to die cut a frame. The bottom is a little wider to accommodate the greeting. I added a die cut C and T to add over the coordinating areas of the greeting. The greeting is pretty easy to read in person, but if you’re having trouble here, it says “One day in the country is worth a month in town”.

Here’s a look at the simple inside. I used the piece of w/c paper I cut out of the frame on front and stamped another country scene w/ the pumice ink, softened it a bit w/ a water brush & added the greeting & a die cut kraft layer.
