Welcome to  the March (pt 2) challenge for  Serendipity Stamps!  We’re switching things up a bit in 2014…The challenges will now be MONTHLY so you have longer to play. The design team will still provide inspiration twice a month (every other Wednesday), but you will have the whole month to play along! The Serendipity Challenge this month is In Stictches (use faux, real, stamped.)  And for the Design Team, we’ve added the twist of using embossing/debaossing with a Serendipity die.. You can find all the details on how to play along with us at the Serendipity Stamps Challenge Blog. With each challenge we always have a gift certificate up for grabs to a random player. Free Shipping on all US orders of $10 or more.   This is a great chance to snap up the stamps from the Wood Mounted Stamp sale and to throw in some grab bags.  Good through 3/26.

For my card today, I used the beautiful Ballerina image. After coloring with Copics, I used my out of the box Nestie technique to die cut her. With the die still in place, I sponged a little antique linen ink around the edges. I did the same with the greeting. The embossed circle was done by first embossing the ornament die onto white card stock, die cutting with a circle die, then I sponged on some of the antique linen & also some rose coral chalk ink. The ballet slippers were fussy cut and added some Copic dyed seam tape and button with a narrow ribbon bow tied through it. The background is a piece of designer paper that I added more of the pink color to and sponged it around the edges. Unfortunately, I was so involved with all the elements, I totally forgot to add the stitching! We’ll just pretend I stitched, lol. Anyway, these are the Copics I used. And I’ll explain that the tutu started out colored with the red violet colors, then when I picked the dp, I had to add the peach & blush colors to warm up the pink to match.

On my first card, I used this beautiful Serendipity Butterflies in Flight 442L, and the fabulous new Perfect Paper Crafting Layers Mini set! I stamped the butterflies twice, colored both with Copics and set aside one for later. On the other, I did a very tricky out of the box Nestie technique on it using a long rectangle die. Normally, it’s not this involved but I had so many points that were out of the box, including two little butterflies on the right that were almost entirely out of the box, that it was more complicated than usual. But it worked! Since I couldn’t line up the PPC mini ruler against the edge, I die cut another the same size and used it for the template to cut the cobalt blue layer using the ruler to create a 1/16 border. The textured white has a 1/4 inch border, followed by another 1/16 inch cobalt border. I used the same 1/16 inch border for the largest cobalt layer as well.

Since I also have the PPC Perfect Airbrush Color Spritzer, I wanted to try it out and see if I really could use my Copic markers with it. It worked great! By removing the insert my sketch markers fit and worked wonderfully. By varying the amount of pressure, I was able to have a soft airbrush look or a more splattered look by squeezing harder. So I masked the butterflies and used the spritzer with several colors using a light mist. Then I used a small acrylic paintbrush dipped in blender solution to splatter the background and the result is the watercolor like look you see here.

The fishtail banner die cut sentiment also has a 1/16 inch cobalt layer created with the PPC Layer Mini and by using just the end of the ruler jutted up against the inside indentation, I was able to use the ruler all the way around. I cut out a few of the extra butterflies and attached them with foam tape for extra dimension. The finished card is 4.25 x 5.50 and these are the Copics I used

My second card is much simpler! After stamping the sofa and coloring, I trimmed around the top, right and lower right edges, leaving only a small section around the left side. I added a strip embossed white panel behind the couch and used the PPC Layers Mini to created a lime green 1/16 inch strip on top before attaching it to a larger chocolate brown layer w/ the greeting white embossed in the lower right. I used the PPC Layer Minis to create a 1/4 inch border on top & bottom with a 1/16 inch border on left & right on the pale aqua checked paper. I attached two strips on top and bottom w/ the chocolate stripe showing and again used the ruler to create the 1/16 inch borders. The finished card is 5.50 x 4.25 and these are the Copics I used.

The Serendipity Challenge this month is In Stictches (use faux, real, stamped.)  And for the Design Team, we’ve added the twist of using a vehicle (bike, boat, plane, train). You can find all the details on how to play along with us at the Serendipity Stamps Challenge Blog. With each challenge we always have a gift certificate up for grabs to a random player. The special this week is 20% off Easter category images. Good through March 12, 2014.

For my vehicle card, I chose this fun tandem bicycle image and made it into a little scene by combining it with the mailboxes image. I stamped the bicycle first, masked it and stamped the mailboxes. I stamped just the grassy/flower portion of the mailbox image a time or two more to add the grass around the bicycle. The little flower bouquet (from the bicycle set) was stamped separately and I cut a slit in the basket to insert it. I used a paper piercer to add the “stitching holes” across the top and bottom and also around the greeting. I used a small corner rounder on one end of the greeting and a maroon Micron pen to add the faux stitches. The finished card is 5.50 x 4.25 and these are the Copics I used to color everything. I know, seems like a lot of colors, but there you go. And the only reason G20 (wax white) is in there is because YG11 (mignonette) was running low and I didn’t want to stop to refill it, lol.
