• DTGD11 Are you playing in the Dirt this week?

You should be! It’s been Dare to Get Dirty Challenge week all week long on Splitcoast and there’s still time to play along. Come on, wouldn’t you love to play in the dirt pile with some of the Dirty Dozen current and Alumni? Take the challenge!

Last year, I hosted a couple of challenges, but this year I provided some samples for a couple of the challenges. This card is for Karen Barber’s DTGD11 challenge for 8/5/11. You can read all about it HERE, but you’ll need to be a Fan Club member. So I won’t tell you what the challenge is, but I will tell you a bit about the card.

All images are Sparkle N Sprinkle. I just love these art deco images and I couldn’t decide which to use, so I used all three. There is one more on the sheet, but I think I worked as many in as I could, lol. They were all stamped, colored w/ markers and cut out. I added a little sparkle w/ some fire engine red glitter just in a few places. The frames on the red layer and the turquoise layer are actually much smaller but I used a stamp positioner to extend them and added some highlights w/ a white gel pen. The sentiment was die cut w/ a ribbon tag then I trimmed off the ends of the tag. The finished card measures 4.25 x 5.5.

While I’m on the DTGD challenges, here is another sample card I made for Suzanne Dean’s DTGD challenge on 8/3/11. I promised to post it here, then totally forgot. It also features images by Sparkle N Sprinkle.

For this one, I stamped the fall image twice on water color paper w/o reinking. I used the fainter image for my inside oval and stamped the greeting above it. I used the largest oval die to cut just the top and went out of the box for the rest. The center oval was stamped w/ the frame using the Kpad. The strip down the left side was punched and pierced and a little flourish was added behind the butterscotch colored scallop oval. The finished card measures 5.5 x 4.25.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Besides being a lot of fun, there are some serious prizes involved if you participate in the DTGD challenges. So check it out!

  • Sewn w/ Love

    Julie Warner - justwritedesigns - https://thewritestuff.justwritedesigns.com

Wonderful sketch today at Splitcoast (SC344)! I turned it and flipped it to fit my images. This is also for Andrea’s DTGD11 challenge. If y’all are Fan Club members, you can read all about it HERE.

All images are Our Daily Bread designs. The tag was stamped, die cut and the sentiment split up a little to fit inside. The pincushion was also die cut and colored w/ markers.

The bottom border of the dp was punched then I went along the punched edge w/ pinking shears. I cut out a couple of sections of embossed measuring tape and sponged over the top and attached them behind the pincushion.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  • ODBD August Release Blog Hop!

    Julie Warner - justwritedesigns - https://thewritestuff.justwritedesigns.com

Welcome to the August release blog hop! If you arrived here from the ODBD Blog, you are in the right place! If not, you might want to start at the ODBD Blog where you will see the entire list with links just in case any are broken along the way!

    Julie Warner - justwritedesigns https://thewritestuff.justwritedesigns.com/

For my project, I made a 6×6 card, which could also be put in a scrapbook or a frame.   These are my grandparents, Margaret and Elmo, circa 1935 when they were married. While I sat looking at all the wonderful new releases, I looked up and saw these pics of my grandparents and remembered how much my grandmother loved to sew and knit and crochet. She taught my mom to sew, who then taught me. Grandmother also taught me to knit. I remember Grandmother’s old black Singer w/ the knee pedal, and she never would trade it for a newer model.  My grandmother had an identical twin sister and I don’t think they lived more that a few miles apart all of their lives. They looked identical their entire lives and while it may have confused others, the family never had trouble telling them apart.  My grandfather survived a devastating hurricane when he was a little boy. Almost the entire city flooded and he was separated from his parents for 3 days. Thankfully, they were all reunited and they even found my Granddaddy’s pony! We used to love going to his Kiwanis club pancake suppers when we were little. Pancakes for supper! What could be better?

I copied and reduced the pictures to fit. There were so many things I wanted to include, like a copy of the patterns of two of my grandmother’s dresses (w/ material swatches) she made for her trousseau. But there just wasn’t room and in the end, I kept to the same sepia tones of the photographs.  Since she loved crochet, the addition of the crochet border seemed the perfect choice. The date w/ the hand stitched border, was from the copy of her dress patterns and is their wedding date in her handwriting.  I included four buttons to represent their four children. Looking at these pictures, it’s funny how much my aunt & uncle (they are also twins) look like these pictures of their parents!

I wasn’t sure whether or not to add the ending. But I’m one who always likes to know how a story ends. For my grandparents, it ended too soon. My grandfather lived until he was in his mid sixties and was coming home from a funeral when he was killed in a car accident. About five years later, my uncle Bud, their oldest son, was killed in a plane crash. My grandmother was a strong, deeply religious woman, but she was never the same after that. Really, none of us were. She lost her battle with cancer about five years after that and her twin sister followed a few years later. We have a lot of happy memories of all of them and I believe as long as the memory lives, the loved one never really leaves us. So the next time I see pancakes, I’ll think of my grandfather and smile. And when I knit or sew,  I’ll think of my grandmother.
